Our Favorite DIY Home Décor Projects for Summer
As we cross our fingers that warm weather is right around the corner, you may be thinking of some ways to brighten up your home for summer. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to make a big impact. Why not try your hand at some DIY home décor?
These are some of RidgeCrest Home Sales’ favorite DIY Home Décor Projects for summer.
1. Plant or Flower Art
With a plain canvas, a can of spray paint, and plants that can be found in your yard or garden, you can create a unique wall hanging that really brightens up any room of the house!
Choose a paint color that will compliment your current décor, but is bright enough to stand out. If you’re going for light, bright summer colors, some of 2016’s most popular colors are:
- Rose Quartz
- Peach Echo
- Serenity
- Snorkel Blue
- Buttercup
- Lilac Gray
To minimize the mess, this project should be done outdoors. Find a large branch of leafy plants or a grouping of flowers and lay them on top of a plain canvas. Holding the spray can back from the canvas, spray the canvas and flowers either horizontally or vertically. Once the whole canvas is painted, remove the flowers and let dry.
2. Crate Shelves
One of the most popular DIY projects is pallet and crate shelves. While it’s possible to do this indoors if the space permits, it’s a great project for outside on a sunny day, especially if you plan to paint them. The shelves not only add character to your home, but also serve as functioning pieces of furniture. Additionally, you can leave these “shelves” separate so you can rearrange the look whenever you like!
You will need:
- At least 4 crates (5 is recommended but the number is optional)
- Stain or paint
- Paintbrush
Be sure the crates are smooth so you avoid splinters in the future. Stain or paint the crates whichever color you choose. Once they dry, find a location to build your shelves and stack them however you would like – it’s that easy!
3. Succulent Terrariums
For those who love the bright, inviting nature of plants, but don’t have the “green thumb” that’s required, terrariums are an awesome DIY home décor summer project!
Since succulents grow and thrive in moss, and can survive in low-light, these trendy summer décor items can brighten up every room of your home. Use cake trays with domed covers, different shaped vases, etc. to plant your succulents. You will need soil and succulents, and any additional decorative pieces such as pebbles, moss, grass, or little figurines. Layer your soil in whatever vessel you’re using to plant your succulents, and then arrange your succulents in the soil.
Get creative with your design and create a terrarium that reflects your personality and current home décor.
4. Modern Lanterns
Perhaps the easiest DIY Home Décor projects for summer are modern lanterns. These look great in outdoor spaces during warm, summer nights, and if the weather is less than desirable, they can be moved inside with your interior decor!
All you need is a large, glass container of some kind (some people use glass boxes or large vases) and candles in varying sizes. Simply arrange the candles in the bottom of the vase or container and you have a modern lantern! You can decorate with stones, sand, seashells, or other items if you wish to create a unique accent piece.
5. Wine Bottle Tiki Torches
Forget the common Tiki torches that stick in the ground, re-purpose your empty wine bottles for a useful item to use on outdoor nights! All you need are:
- Clear / Clear-ish Wine Bottles
- Pebbles
- Tiki Fuel
- Tiki Re-Fill Wicks
- A Brass Coupling
Put the pebbles into the wine bottle and fill the bottle with Tiki fuel. Put the Tiki wick into the brass coupling and insert it into the wine bottle for a finished project! Now you have a creative take on a Tiki torch that will keep the bugs at bay while you enjoy the summer night.
